Blake praises heroes in uniform
Commissioner of Police Dr Kevin Blake has challenged members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) to continue viewing policing as an act of service, saying every interaction with the public has the power to improve lives and strengthen communities.
Addressing the 2026 LASCO JCF Saluting Our Heroes Awards on Monday, Blake said the ceremony was not simply about recognising outstanding officers, but celebrating the impact they have on the people they serve.
“There is always something special about being in a room filled with people whose service has earned the respect of their colleagues and the appreciation of the communities they serve,” he said.
Blake praised the 159 officers honoured during the ceremony, telling them they had earned their place through dedication, professionalism and a commitment to helping others.
According to the police chief, true policing extends beyond arrests and law enforcement. It includes mentoring young people, building relationships, solving community problems and inspiring hope.
“Every day, someone is learning from the way you serve,” he told the awardees. “Sometimes it is the courage required in an urgent situation, other times it is a member taking a genuine interest in a youth and helping that young person to see a better path.”
Blake said the force’s improving crime figures are a reflection of the work being done by officers across Jamaica. Murders, he noted, are approximately 24 per cent below the corresponding period last year.
But he stressed that behind every statistic are real lives being changed.
“We think about families having more time together. We think about children growing up with greater security, and communities having more room to build, work and enjoy life,” he said.
The commissioner singled out the six finalists in the competition, praising their efforts in youth mentorship, anti-gang intervention programmes, skills training, community sports and peace-building initiatives.
“Through your work, you’re helping young people to see new possibilities, bringing communities together, and building relationships that strengthen public safety,” he said.
Blake ended by urging members of the force to continue striving for excellence while delivering “a service worthy of the confidence” of the Jamaican people.
