Coaches of medallists at this summer's World Championships in London will also receive medals.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the event in August announced yesterday that the medals will be given during the medal ceremony to the athletes, who can then hand them over to their coach or significant adviser n recognition of the unique and valued working relationship between athlete and coach.

The possibility of creating a coaching medal was investigated by UK Athletics who form the LOC for the championships, and a request made of the International Association of Athletics Federations, who have given the gesture their support.

The coaches' medals will be based upon similar themes to the athlete medals but will differ in design, with both sets to be unveiled in May.
