Lucky Bridgmohan grabs double at Churchill Downs
Good fortune smiled on Shaun Bridgmohan as he rode a double at historic Churchill Downs here Thursday. The 37-year-old benefited from a disqualification in the day's opening race to win with 30-1 chance Trenton Traveller before following up with victory in race seven with 6-1 chance Zambian.
Bridgmohan has seven wins form 64 rides in the Spring meet which started April 29 and wraps up month-end.The Jamaican opened his account in a five-furlong sprint when he guided the brown gelding Trenton Traveller to victory over the two-year-old maidens.
Aboard the longest shot in the field, Bridgmohan broke slowly but kept in touch from with the leaders from fourth as E-Nine produced the early fractions.
Bridgmohan rallied Trenton Traveller in the stretch but just came up short as E-Nine reached the wire by a head.
However, stewards subsequently ruled that E-Nine had interfered with Red Alert at the furlong marker and disqualified the winner, handing Bridgmohan a fortuitous victory.
No such good fortune was needed for his second triumph as Bridgmohan paired with five-year-old gelding Zambian to beat the three-year-old and upwards by half-length.
Going a mile and sixteenth, 15-1 chance Conquest Mystique set the pace with fractions of 23.99 seconds for the quarter and 47.32 for the half, as Bridmohan chased from mid-pack.
However, he rallied the gelding on the far turn, took command in the stretch and drew off handsomely to be convincing at the wire.
