Aiken re-signs with Queensland Firebirds

June 17, 2017

The Queensland Firebirds have locked in two of their brightest stars for the 2018 Suncorp Super Netball campaign, with captain Gabi Simpson and prolific shooter Romelda Aiken signing contract extensions.

The Firebirds missed the finals in 2017 for the first time since 2012 after making four-straight grand finals.

Simpson and Aiken were integral parts of the back-to-back title runs in 2015 and 2016 and will again form the core of the purple powerhouse.

Simpson said that she believed that the building blocks were in place for the Firebirds to be a force sooner rather than later.

Aiken said that she was not going to play for any other side after making her Firebirds debut in 2008.

"It's always a great opportunity to wear the purple dress. For me, it's my pride and passion, and I'm just enjoying being part of the club," Aiken said.

"It's the culture here. We're very family orientated. We do everything for each other. Everyone who comes out of the Firebirds will tell you how different it is from other clubs.

"This year in the second half of the season we established what we are as a team out there on court. For me, it's going to be really exciting to put the dress on again and make netball fun and exciting for the fans as the Firebirds do."
