Muir lands $50,000 stakes, Nelson moves to third
EDMONTON, Alberta (CMC):
Young Jamaican Shamaree Muir scored a win in a money-added events at Northlands Park last weekend, as Caribbean jockeys continued their domination at the Alberta racetrack.
Muir partnered with 7-1 choice Regal Max to win race three, the $50,000 Two-Year-Old Sales Stakes, over 6-1/2 furlongs, on Saturday's nine-race card.
Muir, fifth in the jockeys' standings on 22 wins, secured his stakes success when he combined with the two-year-old bay gelding Regal Max to trounce the two-year-old colts and geldings foaled in Canada.
Regal Max chased pace-setters Stripling Warrior and Smoke Boss before getting to the front in the stretch and drawing off to win commandingly by eight lengths in a time of one minute, 20.16 seconds.
Meanwhile, Muir's countryman, Dane Nelson, weighed in with a brace, winning race five with 3-1 bet Long Time Don before returning to take race six with 2-1 choice Some Gave All.

In all, Nelson won three races at the weekend to move up to third on 31 wins, seven behind second-place Trinidadian Keishan Balgobin.
Six-time champion Barbadian Rico Walcott leads the standings with 66 wins, 28 clear of Balgobin. The Barbadian remains on course for an unprecedented seventh straight title after landing a triple at the western Canada racetrack on Friday.
Nelson started the weekend in fourth place on 28 winners, two behind Sarmiento Rigo. The Jamaican won once on Friday before claiming third place on Saturday.
