Despite challenges, MoBay City Run hailed a success

On Sunday, the Old Hospital Park on Gloucester Avenue hosted the fifth staging of the MoBay City Run 10K and 5K run/walk that saw just under 4,000 participants competing.

Despite believing the event was an overall success, chief organiser and meet director Janet Silvera said the ongoing state of emergency may have played a part in them not meeting the target number of 5,000.

"We find that some of the companies are just not making as much money as they were making before, so those who had larger groups just cut down," said Silvera, who will be looking to get the benefiting schools to participate more.

The charity event sees all proceeds going toward providing scholarships for needy tertiary students across western Jamaica. So far it has donated in excess of $15 million in its previous four years.

Mayor of Montego Bay Homer Davis applauded the organisers for their efforts.

"I was happy to see the turnout, it tells me we still have that community and city spirit," said Davis "This city run was a huge success in my opinion for the city of Montego Bay."
