Thieves hit historic Spanish Town building, make off with items worth over $1 million

A historic Spanish Town building has become the target of thieves after they allegedly smashed their way inside and made off with air-conditioning units, copper wires and other items valued at more than $1 million.

An investigation has been launched into the break-ins at the Rodney Memorial Building, where several government offices are housed.

Reports are that on August 24, caretakers arrived for work and were met with a shocking discovery — locks had allegedly been smashed and the building broken into.

A subsequent check revealed that thieves had allegedly made off with two air-conditioning units from the Old Courts office.

The Jamaica Archives reportedly lost an air-conditioning condenser unit, while another condenser unit was allegedly stolen from the NIRA/RGD office.

Copper wires valued at approximately $750,000 were also reportedly taken.

The total value of the stolen items is still being calculated and is expected to climb as checks continue.

The matter was reported to the Spanish Town police, who have launched an investigation into the million-dollar theft.
