MC Nuffy celebrates reunion with Spice
After years of tension, fiery exchanges, and online spats, popular dancehall emcee MC Nuffy has finally buried the hatchet with the Queen of Dancehall, Spice. He says the reunion is one of the best things that could have happened for both himself and the dancehall genre.
Known for his sharp wit and bold declarations, Nuffy had publicly voiced his disappointment in Spice over what he once described as "betrayal", stirring up controversy in the dancehall space.
However, the rift came to an end following the July 2024 prison release of Vybz Kartel. The 'Worl Boss' reportedly facilitated a private reconciliation between the two -- an act Nuffy now calls a blessing for dancehall.
"Vybz Kartel mek Spice drop har guard and seh 'Listen, a Addi enuh, and anything di boss seh a it mi a work wid;' suh mi still a big up Gracie same way because di three a wi a come from hungry days," an emotional MC Nuffy said.
"It means a lot to me," Nuffy told THE STAR. "It's a great feeling because the younger generation never got to witness how Nuffy was the biggest motivator behind the king and queen of dancehall."
"Wi a come from one place with me as dem emcee and dem as di deejay. Suh mi a guh call dem out di wickedest pon stage and build dem courage, and a long time mi a mek di people dem know seh a dem a guh be di next king and queen."
Reflecting on their fallout, Nuffy said frustration played a role in his past actions. Still, he is thankful those days are behind him.
"Mi feel good fi know seh mi and Gracie [Spice] a friend again and mi naah guh mek dat happen again because a hungry mi did hungry mek mi dida gi so much problem and create controversy," he said with a laugh.
Nuffy, who has been touring alongside Kartel and Spice since the inaugural Freedom Street concert in December 2024, recently shared a touching Instagram post celebrating the pair's return to the stage. In the post, he expressed how proud he was to witness the two icons performing together again--particularly during a sold-out show in Brooklyn, New York.
The usually high-energy emcee became emotional as he recalled what the reunion meant to him.
"I think if mi and Gracie get a chance fi just siddung and talk alone, wi ago get emotional and break down and cry, like how mi a get emotional now because mi know weh wi a come from and mi know a me root it up and dig it up. But, when mi see har, mi a seh 'Wow, look at Gracie' and laugh inna miself and seh 'Look weh mi build man,' mi feel proud because dis a nuh just supm weh me personally a benefit from, but di entire world and dancehall culture," he shared.
Nuffy recalled the last time he called Spice on stage was in 2018 -- a moment that, until recently, he thought would never happen again. That moment came in the Bahamas and Nuffy said it felt good.
"A weh day di whole a wi deh inna one room a run joke, a laugh and talk and a giggle," he said.
Looking ahead, Nuffy says his past outbursts stemmed from a genuine desire for acknowledgement -- especially when it came to being recognised as Spice's official emcee.
"Mi is a people person, and mi nuh really carry grudge and hatred. Suh mi neva have no hatred fi Gracie. Is just that sometimes mi did feel a way when di hungry a bite mi and mi feel she coulda look out fi mi certain way, and put back likkle money inna mi pocket through a few bookings, knowing how far wi a come from.
"But she know a music mi dida war wid har bout, a nuh nutten personal ... but if mi did hurt yuh Gracie - sorry. Mi love yuh and care bout yuh. Yuh a mi student, mi artiste and mi proud a yuh," he declared.
