Recording artiste Ja’Roy is embracing his Caribbean heritage on Gyalay, a new single that blends contemporary R&B with Afrobeats, dancehall and island-inspired rhythms.

The track, which appears on his latest EP, From Now On, highlights the singer’s ability to move seamlessly between genres while maintaining a sound rooted in the Caribbean.

The inspiration for Gyalay came from a chance encounter with a woman of Caribbean and Spanish heritage. While describing her as a “gyal”, a friend jokingly combined the word with her Spanish background, creating the title that would eventually become the song.

Months later, Ja’Roy stumbled upon a beat infused with Caribbean and Spanish influences and immediately knew he had found the perfect match.

“Once I found the beat, I knew right away that the song was going to be called ‘Gyalay’. It had that Caribbean vibe mixed with a little Spanish influence, and everything just came together,” Ja’Roy explained.

Influenced by artistes such as Drake, Lil Wayne, J. Cole, Chris Brown and Rihanna, Ja’Roy said he has never felt confined to a single musical lane.

“I’ve always believed that music doesn’t have to fit into one box. I rap, I sing, and I enjoy experimenting with different sounds. Gyalay allows me to tap into my Caribbean roots and explore a side of my sound that people might not always expect from me,” he said.

With Jamaican and Trinidadian parents, Ja’Roy said his Caribbean identity remains central to his music, even as he draws inspiration from international sounds.
