Jr Gong brings magical touch to No Better Riddim
Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley has assembled a powerhouse cast of reggae singers and deejays for No Better Riddim, a 16-track juggling project that will be officially released on October 16 via Ghetto Youths International.
The Grammy-winning musician and producer has spent the past several months introducing the riddim through a series of staggered releases, allowing each song to build its own audience before revealing the complete project.
Tracks from Romain Virgo, Alaine, Pressure Busspipe, Ghost, Turbulence and Jaz Elise have already generated attention, while new contributions from Sevana, Richie Spice, Da’Ville, Queen Omega and others will be heard for the first time on the full release.
Produced entirely under Marley’s direction, the project blends roots reggae, lovers’ rock and contemporary influences while staying true to the classic Jamaican juggling format. The result is a collection that carries Marley’s unmistakable musical stamp while giving each artiste room to deliver a unique interpretation of the riddim.
The journey to the full compilation began earlier this year with Jemere Morgan’s Know Better, which introduced listeners to the riddim’s warm, melodic foundation. Ghetto Youths International subsequently rolled out the project song by song, allowing each release to establish its own identity before bringing the complete body of work together.
Among the tracks released ahead of the full project are Romain Virgo’s Lay My Head, Alaine’s Love Again, Pressure Busspipe’s So Amazing, Turbulence’s Twin Flames, Ghost’s Coming Again and Jaz Elise’s Don’t Spoil Love.
At its core, No Better Riddim celebrates a format that has long been central to reggae and dancehall culture. Rather than having an artiste simply appear as a feature, each performer is given the same musical foundation and the freedom to build an entirely different song around it.
