Nesbeth gets reflective with new single ‘One Day’
Reggae artiste Nesbeth is back with fresh music, inspired, he said, by viewing life through a different lens.
The My Dream artiste recently released One Day, a song that examines the cycle of life, particularly how people handle grief and death. He said the track approaches a subject that many shy away from, offering a perspective that differs from the way it is typically explored in music.
“It is looking at life in its truest form and looking at it from an angle that most people don’t see it from. As an artiste, I don’t want to walk the path that everybody is walking. For most, this is a taboo topic, and you won’t see artistes going in the direction that song goes, in the way in which it has been penned. Yes, you have artistes who sing about the topic, but not in the way this has been structured,” he said.
The singer, whose full name is Greg Nesbeth, said his life experiences have shaped his understanding of music and its purpose, noting that his work is intended to resonate beyond his personal experiences. He described One Day as a song that encourages listeners to revisit memories and reflect on their lives.
“It goes deep and beyond because it really is a compact song that takes you down the path of reminiscing and provides that self-reflection. So it’s a full R&R. It reminisces and reflects,” he shared.
Nesbeth said the title was deliberately chosen to be impactful, while allowing listeners to interpret it in different ways. He drew a comparison with the enduring appeal of Bob Marley’s One Love, explaining that he wanted a title that would leave a lasting impression.
“A great song needs a great name. Bob Marley did say One Love and, up until today’s date, One Love remains truly unshakeable. So therefore, I was going to come up with a song that is not within the box; one that, from you hear it, it will go into your heart and your soul. I purposefully targeted it and sent it in that direction. It doesn’t matter how tough a human you claim you are. As I said, as the artiste, it’s a direct and deliberate thing. Once you’re alive, you will have to think about it, so One Day is just perfectly fitting for that song,” he said.
Beyond the new release, Nesbeth said he is working on other musical projects that will continue to reflect his approach to songwriting. He maintained that he prefers to let his lyrics demonstrate his individuality rather than follow prevailing trends.
“My projects are definitely out of the box. They have a saying: ‘A nuh everybody who can dance, a dancer’. Similarly, a nuh everybody who can deejay, a deejay. I will just let my lyrics and verses speak for themselves. I choose not to walk the path of the masses. If I am going to be the person I envision myself to be, then I have to take the path that will also speak to that greatness in the mind that is mine,” he said.
“So a whole lot of work is in the pipeline, and the work will have people opening their eyes and getting their undivided attention without the bad words and lewd lyrics. My music is just me doing what I think I am here to do. So I’m my only competition, and my mandate is for me to bring forth the best version of myself.”
