BABY STOLEN FROM SLEEPING MOTHER

A St Catherine woman, who allegedly stole a baby from its mother while she slept, was granted $75,000 bail when she appeared in the Spanish Town Magistrate Court on Tuesday. She is Rittenilla Loney, 39, of Windsor Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine.

When the matter was mentioned before Resident Magistrate Jacqueline Wilcott, the accused was granted bail. The matter was then suspended until April 1.

Allegations are that, on December 24, the accused went to the complainant's home in Dela Vega City, Spanish Town. She allegedly took the baby from the complainant's niece in whose care the child had been left when the mother retired to bed.

When the mother awoke on Christmas morning, she discovered that the six-week-old child was missing. It is said that the accused tried to elude the mother by not answering calls made to her cellular phone. Loney was eventually held on Christmas Day by the police.

Investigations by Constable Sadian Griffiths resulted in her been charged with child stealing.

Loney was told to report to the Spanish Town Police Station three times weekly.
