Four Haitians detained after being found in car trunk during roadblock

Police have launched an investigation after six Haitian nationals and a Jamaican man were taken into custody during a roadblock operation in Falmouth, Trelawny, on Saturday.

The unusual discovery was made about 9:35 a.m. along Rock Main Road, where members of the Trelawny Divisional Operational Support Team reportedly spotted a white Toyota Fielder travelling west.

Police became suspicious after allegedly seeing a man being transported in the trunk of the vehicle.

The driver was signalled to stop and complied, leading to checks of the vehicle and its occupants.

According to the police, six of the occupants were Haitian nationals. Haitian national identification cards were reportedly found during a search, but investigators said no passports were found.

The circumstances surrounding the group's presence in Jamaica have now become a major focus of the investigation.

Police said five of the Haitian nationals were found with wet clothing and luggage when they were intercepted, adding another unusual element to the case.

The six Haitians and the Jamaican driver were subsequently taken into custody in Falmouth.

Investigations are continuing as police seek to determine how and why the group was travelling in the vehicle and whether any offences were committed.
