George Wright, the caretaker for Central Westmoreland, has expressed concern about the closure of the Hatfield Community Centre in the parish.

Wright said that the centre has been close for more than a year, and this does not benefit anyone in the community.

"It is most important that it be kept open. ... . It presents programmes to the children and young people of the area," he said.

He said the community centre, which was furnished with computers by the Ministry of Technology, was equipped to help youngsters in the community.

"The centre is there to help guide them away from the criminal activities which are overtaking the goodwill of the citizens of Westmoreland," he said.

"I am calling on the member of parliament for Central Westmoreland to have this community centre reopened now. Failing this, I will be forced to request the intervention of the relevant ministries, but I will not allow it to remain closed while the citizens need the use now more than ever," he said.

Efforts yesterday to contact Dwayne Vaz, the member of parliament for Central Westmoreland, proved futile.
