More cops dispatched to Corporate Area stoplights

The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has increased the number of police personnel dispatched at some Corporate Area stoplights during peak hours.

Commanding Officer of the Traffic and Highway Division Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Calvin Allen says that more than 40 cops have been assigned to critical intersections, and that is in addition to personnel in other areas and those who are roving.

He noted that the move is an effort to maintain law and order and safeguard the lives of citizens.

"We started this initiative in February, and it was being done intermittently before, but we now have a structured approach in place to deal with this, and it is working well," he said.

Allen said that the JCF is aware of the cries and concerns of law-abiding motorists who have complained about the congestion and unlawful actions of some motorists at certain intersections in the Corporate Area and who go beyond their designated stop points and disobey road rules during peak hours.

He explained that motorists, anticipating the next light change, move down into the intersection, thereby preventing others who have the green light from going through.

"All of that is coming out of the level of indiscipline and impatience that exists, so we thought it necessary, and rightly so, to place officers at these critical intersections, especially during the peak hours of the morning," he said.
