Kimiko Versatile - Powering through challenges in the heart of Jamaica’s dance scene

In the dynamic realm of Jamaican dance, one name echoes with pulsating energy and an empowering flair - Kimiko Miller, widely known as Kimiko Versatile.

In a recent episode of the Pepsi-Cola Jamaica's 'Spotlight Videocast' series, skillfully hosted by Chad Luchey, Kimiko took a nostalgic journey through her path of empowerment. She candidly shared her experiences of overcoming challenges that paved the way for unique opportunities, emphasising the role of dance in dismantling cultural barriers.

Kimiko's affinity for dance and performance became evident at an early age, with the rhythmic beats of Jamaica coursing through her veins from the very beginning. Her narrative unfolds as a testament to the profound connection between her personal journey and the vibrant pulse of Jamaica's dance scene.

"It's a God-given talent of mine, I was born with it ... . It's embedded in my blood from when I was in my mother's womb; I was moving a lot!" she exclaimed.

According to her, the Dance Academy and ASHE Academy played pivotal roles in shaping her skills and setting the stage for a stellar career in the performing arts. Armed with a bachelor of fine arts in performing arts theatre from Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Kimiko's artistic prowess extends far beyond the traditional realms of dance

"Dance is a body language, it's a form of expressing one's self," she continued. She explained that she uses physical movement as a form of therapy to help with day-to-day life and any form of stress.

The dance choreographer and performer draws her inspiration from a blend of her personal emotions and the rich cultural history inherited from her African ancestors through the use of traditional Jamaican folk dances. This fusion creates a dance style that not only transcends borders, but also speaks to the vibrancy of dancehall culture.

In 2018, Kimiko's dance odyssey reached new heights when Netflix featured her in a captivating documentary MOVE. The film provi-ded an intimate glimpse into her life, capturing moments in Hawaii and Chicago. In the spotlight, Kimiko shared her triumph over the norms of a male-dominated dancehall space.

Expressing the strength of womanhood, she boldly declared, "Dancehall is a male-dominated space, so for me to be creating a female group called Versatile Ones in the documentary, and showing woman power and showing that we are just as good as [men], me feel good about that."

As the world grappled with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimiko's creativity and innovative spirit came to the forefront.

With clients overseas grounded by travel restrictions, her dance studio temporarily closed its doors. However, adversity turned into opportunity, and Kimiko seamlessly shifted her classes to the tranquil north coast of Jamaica. This strategic move not only overcame the hurdles, but elevated the dance experience, blending rhythmic movements with the breathtaking beauty of her homeland.

Beyond the dance floor, Kimiko's artistic talents extend to beauty aesthetics as well as the theatre. It's a testament to her refusal to be confined to a single artistic pursuit, reflecting the diversity and depth of her creative expression.

Looking forward, Kimiko envisions a continued global journey, as she reinforces her commitment to spreading the Jamaican 'Flava' and fostering unity through dance.

"We are building unity with places all over the world with dancehall," she said.

Her story resonates as a cultural ambassador, breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and bringing the warmth of Jamaican culture to every corner of the globe.
