The University of Technology (UTech) defeated hosts G.C. Foster College in male and female matches 5-0 in the male match and 4-1 in the female contest on Thursday.

These complete the first round of matches for males and females. Three-time defending champions UTech males lead the points standings with maximum four points, followed by University of the West Indies (UWI) on three points, and G.C. Foster College two points. The top-two finishers will meet in the final.

On the female side, UTech earned two points and G.C. Foster one point from today's match, the first female match to be played. These two teams will meet in the final, after the return match, as only two teams are participating this year. A new champion will be crowned, as six-time defending champions, UWI, are not taking part this time around.

In individual results in today's male encounter, former three-time national champion Kane Watson, Glen-Ross McDonald, Curtis Dehaney, and Alexander Thomas all scored easy 3-0 singles match victories for UTech over Sheldon Price, Oral Sinclair, Travis Martin, and Kemal Russell, respectively. In doubles, Watson and McDonald trounced Martin and Wiltshire 3-0, to complete the 5-0 blanking.

In the female duel, Kemolyn Frost overpowered Cashane Blackett 3-0, Natasha Wright eased past Suan Reid 3-0 and Tiffany Blake cruised past Ofrecia Jones 3-0, in singles match wins for UTech. Frost and Petrina Bogle overwhelmed Reid and Yvonne Foster 3-0 for UTech's fourth victory. The former eight-time national champion, Foster, strolled past Bogle 3-0, to pull one back for G.C. Foster.

The competition continues next Thursday at 2 p.m. with G.C. Foster at home to UWI in a men's contest.
