DHARAMSALA, India (AP):

Pace bowler Mitchell McClenaghan and spinner Mitchell Santner shared five wickets as New Zealand defeated Australia by eight runs to register a second consecutive win in Group 2 of the ICC World Twenty20 yesterday.

New Zealand, who beat India by 47 runs in their first game, restricted Australia to 134-9 in reply to 142-8.

McClenaghan finished with 3-17 and Santner 2-30 as Australia were left to get 19 runs off the last over from Corey Anderson.

Earlier, left-arm pace bowler James Faulkner and off-spinner Glenn Maxwell returned identical figures of 2-18 after New Zealand opted to bat first on a slow pitch.

Opener Martin Guptill struck 39 off 27 balls with two fours and four sixes, and captain Williamson made 24.

Grant Elliott (27) and Colin Munro (23) chipped in with useful efforts.

Scores: New Zealand 142-8 in 20 overs (Martin Guptill 39; Glenn Maxwell 2-18, James Faulkner 2-18); Australia 134-9 in 20 overs (Usaman Khawaja 38; Mitchell McClenaghan 3-17, Corey Anderson 2-27, Mitchell Santner 2-30).
