Mico wins Intercol rugby league for fourth time
The Mico University College defeated the arch-rivals GC Foster College 22-18 in a thrilling grand final on Saturday at Duhaney Park football field. It is a record fourth consecutive Intercollegiate title for Mico.
Mico controlled the first half on the back of powerful running by their big forwards. However, their wingers Kemar Ricketts and Devaughn Stewart both scored tries. Fullback Damone Downer kicked two field goals for a comfortable 12-2 lead. Kareem Harris converted a penalty kick for GC's points.
Mico went up 16-2 early in the second half when captain Fabion Turner made a scintillating run down the left edge to score. On 60 minutes, GC Foster finally got the try they needed when centre Miguel Facey collected his own chip over kick to dot down near the goal. Kareem Harris slotted over the extra two points to trail 8-16.
As the game wound down, Mico struggled to crack GC's now tenacious defence. With 90 seconds on the clock, Mico's Turner sent a missile-like pass to prop Rashaun Lewis, whose long arms slammed the ball over the line as desperate defenders clung to the big man. Downer again kicked the conversion for the 22-18 win, Mico once more erupting in wild celebration as the final whistle sounded.
Reflecting on the match,
GC Foster's coach Marlando Anderson said, "It was a good match, evenly contested, we just lost the plot at the end with our defence but it was a gallant effort from the lads and I am very proud of the school."
Turner said, "This was a tough one, we wanted it more, it meant a lot to defend our legacy."
The University of Technology claimed third place with a 28-22 win over the Excelsior Community College.
