Inter-kindergarten and Basic School Championships on today
Smurfs Early Childhood Centre in Kingston will seek to register their second consecutive win of the Inter Kindergarten & Basic School Championships today. More than 200 students from 12 schools converge at the Constant Spring mini football club for the annual Championships.
The championships, in its 20th year, is supported by basic schools in the Corporate Area and one school from Montego Bay.
This year's competition received a major financial boost from Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), title sponsors, which will further enhance the quality of the event.
Norma Reid, director, Smurfs Early Childhood Centre, and brainchild behind the meet, said the championships started with Smurfs Early Childhood Centre and Sunrise Kindergarten Schools and has evolved for the last two decades.
"Outstanding athletes such as Oshane Bailey, Michael O'Hara, and Duce Carter were students at Smurfs Early Childhood Centre and were participants in the championships," Reid said.
She explained that the students, ranging from three to six, will compete in a variety of races, including 30, 40, and 50 metres, 'catch the bus', 'obstacle', 'potato' and 'lunch kit' races.
Participating schools in this year's championships are Aintree Basic, Allman Town Infant, Apex Early Childhood, Ascot Basic, Chevannes Basic, Dunrobin Early Childhood Lalyce Gray Basic, Mount Alvernia Preparatory, Shortwood Infant, Silverstone Basic, Smurfs Early Childhood and St Michael's Infant Schools.
