Vere's Ben Francis meet set for February 18

Many-time national girls' champions Vere Technical High will be looking to make a big statement via their seventh annual Ben Francis Invitational Track and Field meet, which the organisers hope will rival the popularity, competitiveness, and excitement of other top development meets this year.

The event is set for an 8 a.m. start on Saturday, February 18, in Hayes, Clarendon.

The launch of the event, named after former principal Ben Francis, took place at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston, yesterday.

This year, the organisers will serve up some competitive events. A whopping $40,000 will go to schools that win the girls' Class One 100m, 400m Class One boys, 4x100 Class One boys and girls' 4x400m open.

There will also be a cash prize of $30,000 for the top coach.

The list of events to be contested are: 100m, 400m, 1,500m, 3,000m for girls, 5,000m for boys, 2,000m steeplechase, long jump, triple jump, javelin, high jump, shot put, discus, 400m hurdles, 70m hurdles, 80m hurdles, 100m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 4X100m relay and 4x400m relay.

Head of the physical education department at Vere, Tamara Williams-Gayle dubbed the event "the meet of champions."

"It will continue to help contribute to the holistic development of Jamaican athletes," she pointed out.

Olympian Ethlyn Tate, a Vere past student, will be honoured at the meet. GraceKennedy are the title sponsors.
