Chapelton Maroons sure of three points in Clarendon derby

October 09, 2026

Chapelton Maroons’ technical director Craig Butler called his team’s 6-0 drubbing by Waterhouse on Monday ‘embarrassing’, and took full blame for the defeat.

However, he pointed out that it was a learning moment for his team and predicted that they will bounce back with a win over Clarendon rivals Humble Lion this Sunday at Effortville Community Centre. Match time is 3:30 p.m.

Butler, in an effort to ease the sting of the defeat, quoted a famous line used by many Jamaican musicians, saying, “Mama said there will be days like this, there will be days like this.”

He continued: “Sometimes, to learn and improve, you have to be beaten, you have to feel the wounds, you have to lick the wounds and rise again.

“I am very disappointed in us. Maybe I failed as a coach, and I take full responsibility. I am not going to blame them, but we have to go back to the drawing board and put in some work. We are not where we need to be, and it’s my fault,” he said.

Butler said they failed in every department and lacked heart and commitment.

“We were lacking in commitment to the system. People were not fit and, if you take things for granted, you will always be punished, and for that I take the blame.”

Lasting effect

Nevertheless, he does not believe it will have a lasting effect on their performance.

“It’s a learning opportunity. It’s not the first 6-0 I got. I remember when the guys were very young, in our first competition against Meadhaven, we got 6-0,” he recalled.

“The second game, we got another 6-0 from Cooreville Gardens, and this is life; we can’t win every game.

“To lose like this is very embarrassing but, humbly, we appreciate it. We want to thank Waterhouse for the opportunity they have given us to actually win this league,” he stated.

The Maroons are 10th in the 14-team table with four points, and they face a Humble Lion team sitting second from the bottom with just a point.

Butler anticipates getting nothing but three points when they turn out on Sunday.

“We will win that game. We will rise above our challenges. We have great coaches, we just need to get the players a little more focused and use the right pieces,” he added.

Feature match

Meanwhile, in the feature match of the round, leaders Montego Bay United take on Cavalier at Stadium East.

MoBay lead the table with 10 points from four games, while Cavalier sit in sixth position on seven points from three matches.

In the day’s other game, bottom-of-the-table Dunbeholden will continue the hunt for their first point of the season, when they host 11th place Molynes United, who have three points, at Dunbeholden Sports Complex.

All matches start at 3:30 p.m.
