UWI FC seek play-off spot
The University of the West Indies (UWI) will look to cement a spot in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) championship play-off stage when they face off against Reno FC tomorrow at the UWI Bowl, Mona, starting at 3:30 p.m.
UWI are in their sophomore season in the nation's elite league and currently on top with 51 points from 27 games, while Reno are in seventh place on 31 points from 25 games. UWI lead Reno by a massive 20 points, so with that scenario, a win for the tertiary outfit would put them through to the business round.
The Marcel Gayle-coached UWI are playing good football and Reno will have to travel with their 'A' game in order to ambush a solid UWI.
UWI's captain Rochane Smith is the team's top scorer on seven goals and he should get valuable support from former Preston North End in England player Keammar 'Dada' Daley, Kemar Flemmings, big defender Patrick Brown and competent goalkeeper Amal Knight for their 16th win of the season.
Since the return of key striker Craig Foster from Harrisburg City Islanders in the United States, the Westmoreland-based Reno have rose to seventh position. He is expected to get support from Afiba Chambers, Renorio Downswell, Rondell Morris, Alburn Facey and others.
Another key matchup will see Jamalco against Boys' Town in a relegation battle. Jamalco are currently in 10th position on 26 points, while Boys' Town are at the bottom on 20 points in the 12-team RSPL.
Meanwhile, Jermaine 'Teddy' Johnson of Tivoli Gardens is the competition's top goalscorer on 13 goals, followed by Shamar Nicholson of Boys' Town on 11 strikes.
