Record entry for Mayberry Swim Meet
A record number of participants will take part in the 2019 Mayberry Investments All-Island Swim Meet scheduled for the National Aquatic Centre today and tomorrow.
President of the Aquatic Sports Association of Jamaica Martin Lyn says almost 1,000 student-athletes from preparatory, primary and secondary schools from across the island are down to compete.
"The entries have increased dramatically," Lyn said at the launch yesterday. "We have had to cut down some of the events because if not, we would just go on and on, and we don't want it to go overtime.
"The first day of the meet is for the high schools, and the second day is for the prep and primary schools."
Title sponsors, Mayberry Investments, has been with event for 21 years and assistant vice-president for marketing, Anika Jengelley, says her company will continue to sponsor the meet as swimming has been under supported.
"It is part of our corporate social responsibility mandate where we try to support sustainable development in our communities and this is one of the key initiatives that we have for the development of our young people," she said. "We believe that sports in schools actually help the performance of the students, and for that reason, we have always encouraged the participation of sports."
The meet is scheduled to kick off at 8 a.m.
