J’can to rep at Junior Gymnastics World Championships
Jamaica's Nazstazia Henry is scheduled to compete in the first staging of the Junior Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Gyor, Hungary, today.
Jamaica was given a spot to compete at the inaugural event because of its upward movement in the sport, president of the Jamaica Gymnastics Association, Nicole Grant, said.
"They gave us one spot, and it is a female spot, and that spot was given to us because we competed at the Junior Pan American Championships last year, and because Nazstazia was the one who competed at the Pan American Junior Championships, she was chosen to go," Grant told THE WEEKEND STAR Sports.
"She had the dress rehearsal on Wednesday, and it went well, and we are expecting her to do well."
The 13-year-old is hoping to use this opportunity to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games.
"This is really a booster. It is something that is exciting for the gymnastics community. We are really happy to know that there are other events for the juniors so that they can look forward to more elite events in order for us to continue to build the sport locally," she said. "Our objective is to facilitate transition from the juniors to the seniors, and I think this is an avenue to do that."
