Citing long-term intent, new sponsor Legend wants to enable the growth and progression of the nation’s football talent from the Jamaica Premier League to the world stage.

The beer producers announced a whopping $300 million sponsorship of the country’s top football competition at the AC Marriott Hotel in New Kingston on Tuesday night, where Andrew Mahfood, CEO of Wisynco – producers of Legend beer – announced plans for the Legend Jamaica Premier League.

Push talent

“This is a serious step for Legend,” he declared. “We are going to stand behind the Jamaica Premier League. We are going to push the talent of our Jamaican people and watch them soar overseas and locally. It is a great industry, and we are happy to be a part of it,” said Mahfood.

“There is nothing closer to the heart of the Jamaican people than great talent, sports and football. I was watching the JPL last (Monday) night, and I saw one of the Waterhouse players do a bicycle kick, and I couldn’t believe it!

“Jamaican athletes have what great athletes have, and we need to find a way to groom these young men, nurture them and give them an avenue to flourish, and that is what we are going to do with them,” admitted Mahfood.

“Legend has been talking and putting up signs and putting up a lot of things around, but there is no better platform to go to our family, the Jamaican people, with this beer than through the Jamaica Premier League. It is the perfect place for this to launch,” Mahfood underlined.

Five-year deal

Wisynco’s investment entails a five-year commitment, described as significant by Owen Hill, CEO of the Professional Jamaica Football Limited PFJL), because it guarantees assurance.

“This speaks to the fact that the product is investable and the clubs are investable and we are very happy that Legend has come on board,” he said. “We have to prove why football deserves it and why they need to come back year after year. So while it is five years, we want this to be a 50-year partnership.

“This is a launch of a new era, but the partnership gives us the ability to actually execute on the plans that we have. It helps create the financial stability that is required. We are grateful for those opportunities, and we are ensuring that the 14 clubs within the communities across the length and breadth of Jamaica understand the importance and protect the brand and keep supporting it.”

Clubs happy

Cavalier’s Rudolph Speid and Montego Bay United’s Yoni Epstein welcomed the sponsorship.

“It is a big investment; it is something that we need. They are a young brand as a beer. I think it will be a beneficial partnership for both,” said Speid.

“This sport will allow them to get a greater market share than what they have now. It is a smart business move. Football is the most popular sport, and if you want to be the most popular beer, you must come here,” he stated.

Epstein said: “It is massive and I think it is a huge start, and for a company like Wisynco here in Jamaica, with size and power, I think a lot of people will follow and want to support football in Jamaica.”
