Stevie Face reimagines John Holt classic
Reggae artiste Stevie Face has recently collaborated with Grammy-winning producers Mikey Bennett and Rohan 'Snowcone' Fuller to record his rendition of John Holt's timeless reggae hit, I Want You To Want Me.
Although it was popularised by the Jamaican rocksteady and reggae legend Holt, who passed away in 2014, the song was first recorded by American singer Lobo in 1972.
"John Holt was truly one of Jamaica's greatest vocalists. Growing up, I listened to him alongside other legends like Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs. I always admired their soulful lovers rock style, which feels somewhat absent from today's music. I aim to keep that classic reggae lovers rock spirit alive by singing songs like this John Holt masterpiece," shared the St Thomas-based singer.
Stevie Face revealed that his version, titled Want You, will be featured on his highly anticipated fourth album, expected to be released this year.
"This upcoming album is a monumental project for me. I've had the pleasure of working on this album with some of the best in the business, including Mikey Bennett, Tads, Big A, Snowcone, Kirk 'Kirkledove' Bennett, Lenky Marsden, and Dean Fraser. I'm creating a musical experience that reggae lovers worldwide will truly appreciate," he stated.
While not yet officially released, Want You is already receiving significant airplay both locally and internationally.
"I am incredibly grateful for the positive response to this song. It's getting consistent rotation across Jamaica and is also receiving strong support from DJs in other countries, including England, the United States, Africa, Europe, and Canada," Stevie Face said.
Adding to the excitement, Stevie Face recently filmed a music video for the single, which is slated for release before month end.
"We filmed the video at the iconic Tuff Gong Studio, and also captured scenes in different locations across Kingston and St Thomas," he explained. "I'm eagerly awaiting the final edit, but I'm already thrilled with what I've seen. Huge thanks to directors Amlak and Yacob for their outstanding work on this project. I can't wait to release both the single and the video."
