‘Gal Policy’ experiences rebirth

A dancehall song released years ago has found a new audience on international television, giving producer Jahvy Ambassador another reason to celebrate the staying power of Jamaican music.

Gal Policy, performed by Kranium and produced by Jahvy Ambassador on his Soul Survivor Riddim, was featured in 50 Cent’s crime drama series, Fightland.

For Jahvel Morrison, known professionally as Jahvy Ambassador, the placement is significant not simply because of the series, but because the song continues to find new opportunities long after its initial release.

“It’s an amazing feeling. I’m delighted to know that even years after its release, it’s still able to be an impactful record in the global space,” Jahvy Ambassador said.

The opportunity came through his publishing team, which approached him about securing the song for the series.

“My team is always working, so I’m grateful. When I saw my publisher reach out to me with a sync deal opportunity, I didn’t hesitate,” he shared.

The television placement gives the Jamaican-produced track another route to international listeners while underscoring the potential for dancehall recordings to travel beyond their original release cycles.

For Jahvy, it is also a reflection of the position Jamaican music has carved out internationally.

“It says that we are a genre to be reckoned with globally, as our music is competing in the same spaces as other genres in the global market,” he said.

Jahvy has built his career through production work with a number of dancehall artistes and projects. The continued life of Gal Policy offers a reminder of how a recording can take on renewed significance when it reaches new audiences through visual media.

Sync licensing has become one avenue through which existing music can enter new spaces, with songs being placed in television, film and other productions.

Jahvy said the latest achievement has not slowed his focus on new music. He is currently working on several projects but is keeping details of those releases private for now.

“Right now, I’m working on a lot of new music. I’m excited to share it with the fans soon,” he said.

He also credited the listeners who have continued to support his work.

“I just wanna say thank you and continue supporting the music that I make. It means a lot, and I’ll continue to make the fans proud,” he said.

For Jahvy Ambassador, the appearance of Gal Policy in Fightland adds another chapter to a song that continues to find relevance years after its release — and another international platform for a Jamaican dancehall production.
