Investigators attached to the Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) charged a couple for seven counts of conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by means of false pretense under the Common Law and the Larceny Acts last week Thursday.

Charged are 33-year-old Offerey Blackwood and Tanya Smith, both of Eastney Close, Portmore, St Catherine.

Reports are that between December 2013 and November 2015, Blackwood and Smith collected approximately $252,000 from several persons after Blackwood claimed that he was a member of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and was in the process of assisting them to become members. However, after not receiving any calls for enlistment, the persons made reports to the Fraud Squad Unit of C-TOC in November and an investigation was launched.

Blackwood and Smith were later arrested and charged. They appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday when Blackwood was remanded in custody and Smith's bail extended until Thursday.
