An elderly man who is suspected of being intoxicated, died in a motor vehicle accident in the Portland Cottage area of Clarendon last night when a car ran over his body.

According to information from the Clarendon police accident and emergency unit, 70 year-old Joseph Thompson was reportedly lying in the road about 8 p.m., when he was crushed by the motor vehicle. He died on the spot.

An investigator told The Star that the deceased was reportedly drinking and may have been intoxicated when he was crushed to death by a reversing motor vehicle.

"From our investigation, we don't believe there was any malicious intent on the part of the unit operator when he reversed on the deceased who was unknowingly lying on the road way," the investigator told The Star. "It's more of a case of a drunk man lying on the road way and was run over by the car we believe."
