Mourner shot at funeral
A mourner was shot and killed by brazen gunmen during a funeral procession Monday in a community called Claremont in the western parish of Hanover.
Information reaching THE STAR is that 26-year-old Tremain Spence of a Brissett, Lucea address, was gunned down by unknown assailants at the start of a funeral for a man who was reportedly stabbed to death.
THE STAR gathered that heavily armed men invaded the service and opened fire on a group of people before escaping on foot in the area.
It remains unclear if the shooting was an act of reprisal in relation to ongoing gang feuds reportedly plaguing sections of the parish, which has resulted in an increase in murders this year.
Deputy Superintendent Artel Coley of the Hanover division told THE STAR that there was a deadly shooting prior to the start of the church service.
He said "the murder was committed during the procession leading to the funeral," seeking to dispel widely held theory that the man was killed during the service.
DSP Coley also told THE STAR that two men were taken into custody and a nine-millimetre pistol seized during a stop-and-search operation following another funeral in the parish.
"The men were on a motorcycle coming from a funeral and during the search the weapon was found. They were taking into custody," said DSP Coley.
He said the stop-and search operation was not triggered by Spence's death.
