A man who found an iPhone and demanded cash for its return to the owner was slapped with a $15,000 fine.

The man, Prince Gordon, pleaded guilty to the charge of larceny by finding when he appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Friday.

The court heard that Gordon, after finding the phone, searched it and then contacted the mother of the complainant. He reportedly demanded $30,000 for the return of the phone.

"I went inside the phone and saw that the daughter attended UWI and that she had important stuff on her phone. Her mother offered me $15,000 and I said I would not take it. She insisted, and Your Honour, because me have three children and mi sick I said I would do it," Gordon told Parish Judge Chester Crooks.

The court was told that Gordon again made contact with the mother, who lives overseas, and told her that someone offered him $45,000 for the phone. He reportedly told her to improve her $15,000 offer for the return of her daughter's iPhone.

A report was made to the police after which Gordon was arrested and charged. He was fined $15,000 or three months' imprisonment at hard labour.
