Venesha Phillips officially crosses over

Councillor for the Papine division in the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation, Venesha Phillips, officially crossed the floor to the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) on Tuesday morning.

The occasion was anticipated following her first public showing as a Labourite at the JLPs 80th annual conference in November.

Phillips was greeted with shouts of “traitor” and “mad dem a mad out” from her former People’s National Party (PNP) colleagues as she walked to her new seat.

The firebrand two-term councillor was defeated in the last general elections when she challenged Fayval Williams for the St Andrew Eastern seat.

She had been at odds with key factions of the PNP leading up to and after a tumultuous leadership change in 2020.
