Born to paint Armless teen shines in CSEC
He first captured the Internet’s attention navigating school life without hands and with shortened feet, but 17-year-old Tyrece Johnson is now giving people another reason to cheer.
The youngster has conquered Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Visual Arts and is turning his remarkable talent into a pathway towards his dream career. The Belair High School graduate is proving that his ability to defy expectations extends far beyond simply getting through the school day. He paints, creates and dreams just like any other aspiring artist.
Despite being born different, Johnson has developed a unique technique that allows him to bring his ideas to life.
“I hold my pencil and brush between my shoulders and neck and do it,” he told THE STAR.
And it is a technique he has mastered.
His determination has now paid off with a Grade II in visual arts at CSEC — a result that has taken him another step towards his goal of building a career in the creative industry.
“I am feeling good about the pass,” he told THE STAR.
CSEC visual arts challenges students to combine artistic talent with research, creativity, experimentation, technical skills and knowledge of art theory. Grades are based on how effectively they demonstrate these competencies through their artwork, reflective journal, production papers and school based assessment portfolio.
Johnson, who learned of his results on Tuesday morning, said he is eager to continue developing his artistic abilities.
“I want to be a graphic designer and if I get to go to Edna [Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts]. I would pursue visual arts and graphic design. I am excited to pursue my arts further because I want to improve my skills, learn new techniques and create even more artwork in the future,” he said.
For his mother, Kameshia Jordine, the achievement has been an emotional one.
“I’m very proud, I didn’t cry but I was overwhelmed,” she said.
Beyond his standout performance in visual arts, Johnson also secured passes in English A, principles of business, office administration and electronic document preparation and management. His five CSEC passes have opened the door to several possibilities for the teen, who now has his sights set on the Edna Manley College.
Johnson, who dreams of taking his art far beyond the classroom, already has an ambitious vision for his future.
“I hope to see my paintings all over the world someday,” he said.
