St. Bess, Jamalco meet for South Central Confed title
St Bess Football Club of St Elizabeth will attempt to become the parish's first team to reach the play-offs of the nation's top-flight Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) in more than three decades when they take on last season's finalists, Jamalco, in the South Central Confed play-off final at Brooks Park tomorrow starting at 3:45 p.m.
Both teams scored narrow semi-final victories to book their places in the decider, with St Bess getting past Tru-Juice 1-0 courtesy of a Dajic Dejan extra-time goal.
Jamalco turned back Dunbeholden 4-3 on penalties after playing to a 1-1 regulation and extra-time draw.
The parish of St Elizabeth has not seen a top-flight representative since the mid-70s, but the Oneil Thomas-coached St Bess is looking to change history.
"The two teams that reached the final have a good chance of winning it, but history is in the making for St Elizabeth so we are going to see how best we can create this history," he told STAR Sports.
Jamalco's coach, Ryan Johnson, is wary of St Bess' experience but expects his team's own experience at this stage to see them through.
"We have a good chance of making it to the play-offs. St Bess is an experienced team; they have a few Premier League players so we have to be mindful of that. Our team is young, but we have the zeal. On the day, we just have to play our game," he said.
"We have been here before so the guys know what is at stake. We don't want to make the same mistakes we made for the last two seasons, so we are just trying to do our best," he added.
