Knight Riders ambush Amazon Warriors

July 12, 2016

South African Hashim Amla stroked his third half-century of the Caribbean Premier League as Trinbago Knight Riders dealt leaders Guyana Amazon Warriors their first defeat with a seven-run victory here Sunday night.

Sent in at the National Stadium, Knight Riders defied the run of low scores on the notoriously difficult pitch to rally to 151 for four off their 20 overs, thanks mainly to Amla who topscored with 64 from 54 deliveries.

Captain Dwayne Bravo produced a cameo 25 from a mere eight balls, while Pakistani Umar Akmal carved out an unbeaten 23 from 22.

Seamer Rayad Emrit was the best bowler with two for 32.

In reply, captain Martin Guptill hit 50 off 40 balls and Chris Lynn, 21 off 18, but Amazon Warriors lost momentum in the second half of the innings to collapse badly, finishing on 144 for nine. They were 63 for two in the 11th over, but lost their next seven wickets for 80 runs.

Left-arm spinner Anton Devcich (2-17) and off-spinner Sunil Narine (2-25) picked up two wickets apiece, while medium pacers Bravo (2-33) and Kevon Cooper (2-33) finished with similar figures.

The victory hauled Knight Riders back into the race for the play-offs as they moved to four points, while Amazon Warriors were kept on eight.
