Captain fantastic, Chris Gayle, played through the pain barrier last night to pilot the Jamaica Tallawahs to a dramatic five-wicket win over the Guyana Amazon Warriors at Sabina Park last night.
Coming to the wicket with the Tallawahs' innings in disarray at 45 for five, Gayle slammed the ball to all parts of the field and sent the home crowd into wild celebrations.
His unbeaten 45 came off 29 balls with two fours and four sixes. He was the dominant partner in a match winning 87-run sixth-wicket stand with Shakib Al Hasan who top-scored with 54 not out.
A Tallawahs victory had appeared unlikely after two overs when four wickets fell for just two runs. Andre Russell (24) then started the fightback which was completed by an injured Gayle, batting at number seven, and Shakib.
Earlier, the Guyana Warriors found runs hard to get against spinner Imad Wasim, two for 12, and fastman Dale Steyn, two for 31, and were restricted to 128 for six in 20 overs. Jason Mohammed got a topscore 46 not out while Chris Lynn made 33.
Final scores: Guyana Amazon Warriors 128 for six (20 overs); Jamaica Tallawahs 132 for five in 15.5 overs.
