Spartans lead SBC best of five finals
Spanish Town Spartans took a step closer to winning the Southern Basketball Conference (SBC) title after scoring an impressive 69-61 win over Pembroke Hall Warriors in game one of their five match final series at the Pembroke Hall courts on Thursday.
Brian Martin with 22 points and 21 rebounds, and Gary Reid with 14 rebounds, led the way for the Spartans who are in search of their second hold on the trophy, following their success in 2010.
Despite playing at the Warriors court, the Spartans showed no sign of nerves and took the game to the host from the opening whistle and never look back. They outscored their opponents 17-12 in both the first two quarters to take a 34-24 lead at half-time. Their dominance continued into the third period, which they won 25-22 to take a 13 points lead (59-46) going into the last quarter.
The Warriors best effort came in the last quarter, where they managed to take the quarter 15-10, but the Spartans still won by eight points clear.
Anthony Farquharson was Pembroke Hall's top scorer with 22 points and nine rebounds. Andrew Whilby supported with nine points and 16 rebounds.
Game two in the series is set for this evening at the G.C. Foster College at 7 p.m.
