Bridgeport clip St Jago
Bridgeport Comprehensive High School took charge of Group G of the ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup on September 19 with a 2-1 win over St Jago High School.
A very early goal from Jevaughn Dunn put Bridgeport on the road to victory, and the previously undefeated St Jago team couldn't get back to level terms.
Dunn's goal came after three minutes and gave Bridgeport the confidence to play some neat football in the rest of the first half. Dante Green doubled the lead when his gentle cross was mishandled by St Jago's usually safe goalkeeper Akeem Chambers.
It was cruel luck for Chambers who had earlier saved a penalty.
Darnell Williams headed a late consolation goal for St Jago. Another header, this time by Shakiel Wright, might have made the final score 2-2, but instead it smacked the crossbar.
Garnet Lawrence, coach of Bridgeport, described the encounter as a 'very, very good match'. He expects his team to improve as the tournament continues.
"We can do a lot more," he said, "I think the nerves plus the drums were getting to us, but we gathered our momentum and we tried to pass it around."
His St Jago counterpart Glen Laing regretted chances missed by his team. "Most of these teams are on the same level but you have to get goals," he said. St Jago's top striker Kirk Samuda missed the game having been shown the yellow card in two previous matches.
