Walker Cup qualifiers set for intriguing battle
Qualifiers for the quarterfinals of the ISSA Walker Cup knockout competition have been confirmed after three days of action this week, with several of the favourites booking their places in the final eight.
Vauxhall High, Mona High, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS), Kingston College (KC), Jamaica College (JC), Eltham High, Excelsior High, and Wolmer’s Boys’ have all advanced to the quarterfinals.
It also means that a new champion will be crowned this season after defending champions St Catherine High did not advance.
The quarterfinals are set to kick off tomorrow, with matches to be played at Drewsland Mini Stadium and Stadium East.
DREWSLAND MINI STADIUM
In a double-header at Drewsland, fast-rising Vauxhall High will go up against 2023 Manning Cup champions Mona High in what is expected to be a dramatic affair.
The Kyle Butler-led Vauxhall booked their spot in the quarterfinals after wins over Norman Manley High and Charlie Smith High.
Vauxhall turned back Norman Manley 2-0 in the first round and needed penalties to get the better of Charlie Smith in a game that ended in controversial fashion.
They will look to continue their march when they face off against Mona High, who got the better of Bridgeport High and Edith Dalton James High.
Mona began their campaign with a 5-0 win over Bridgeport and continued their dominant performance when they turned back Edith Dalton James 3-0 yesterday.
In the curtain-closer, STATHS will go head-to-head against KC in a clash of title contenders.
STATHS have enjoyed a smooth run to the quarterfinals after blanking Jonathan Grant High and St Jago High 5-0 and 3-0, respectively.
Their opponents, KC, are also yet to concede this season after registering identical 3-0 wins over St Mary’s College and Calabar High.
STADIUM EAST
At Stadium East, perennial title contenders JC will face off against a free-scoring Eltham unit for a spot in the semi-finals.
JC received a bye to the second round of the Walker Cup after their opponents, Meadowbrook High, withdrew from the competition.
They opened their second-round account by turning back St George’s College 2-1 in a hotly contested affair.
Eltham, on the other hand, have been in fine goalscoring form this season as they thumped Papine High 4-1 before hammering Campion College 5-0 in their next game.
They will face a tough encounter against JC this time around, but the boys from St Catherine will be confident that they can pull off the result.
In the feature game, reigning Manning Cup champions Excelsior High will go toe-to-toe with the boys from Heroes’ Circle, Wolmer’s.
Excelsior showed their champion pedigree when they hammered Kingston Technical High School 7-0 in their opening game but did not contest the second round after their opponents, Waterford High, conceded the match before kick-off.
Wolmer’s, on the other hand, have already eliminated one reigning schoolboy champion, clipping St Catherine High 5-4 on penalties in the second round, after a 4-1 drubbing of Hillel Academy in their opening game.
