Jamaican jumper qualifies for European Indoors
Julian Howard, the German long jumper who was training in Jamaica in January, has qualified for the European Indoor Championships. Howard surpassed the required distance at an indoor meet in his hometown of Karlsruhe on the weekend. Howard, whose father is a Jamaican, placed second overall with a jump of 7.97 metres.
That leap is seven centimetres more than the European Indoor qualifying distance. That first-round effort gave Howard the lead but in the end, he was second to South African Khosto Mokena. The South African's best jump was 8.05 metres.
Jamaica's Olympic long jumper finalist Damar Forbes was sixth with a best distance of 7.44 metres.
