Jermaine 'Teddy' Johnson bagged a double as Tivoli Gardens defeated Portmore United 2-1 in a Red Stripe Premier League match at the Edward Seaga Complex yesterday.

Following back-to-back defeats to UWI FC and Harbour View, the west Kingston team were intent on getting back to winning ways. The win lifted them from fourth to second in the standing, two adrift of leaders UWI (47).

Johnson got the home team off the mark when he converted from the spot two minutes before the break, after Junior McGregor was tripped inside the area.

However, that lead lasted just two minutes as, Ewan Grandison, scored directly from a corner, beating Tivoli custodian Davin Watkins.

After the interval, the game came to life with Johnson leading the charge for the home team. Tivoli got the winner in the 67th minute. McGregor stole the ball from Portmore's Roberto Johnson and fed the former Bolton striker who fired past Shaven-Sean Paul goal from 20 yards..

" Teddy continues to live up to expectations and he came up big again. This was a very important three points. Both teams wanted it but Tivoli wanted it more," Tivoli's coach Omar Edwards said.

Portmore's coach, Lenworth Hyde, said his opponents defended stoutly.

"We tried to get back into the game but they fought hard and defended well," he said.

In other results, UWI FC stayed top of the table after a 0-0 draw with Maverley/Hughenden (24) while Waterhouse (27) clipped Jamalco (23) 1-0.

Reno will face Harbour View at STETHS in today's lone game. Kick off time is 3:30 p.m.
