STATHS banking on wily White
Outstanding St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) goalkeeper and captain, Jaedine White, will lead his team's defensive unit into battle against Bridgeport High in Manning Cup action today.
White, a national Under-17 player, turned in a Man of the Match performance to help STATHS earn a 1-1 draw against defending champions Jamaica College in their opening game on Saturday at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall.
White, who kept goal for Cavalier in the KSAFA Super League last season, made a number of outstanding point-blank saves throughout the match to deny the JC attackers.
The lanky custodian best effort came in the 52nd minute when he dived to his left to save a penalty kick from the boot of JC striker Maliek Howell.
However, White, along with David Smith, Noel Walker and Steven McLean will have their hands full against Bridgeport, who thrashed Donald Quarrie 6-0 in their opening game.
Philip Williams, coach of STATHS, told STAR Sports that White is among the best goalkeepers in the competition and he expects great things from hiM this season.
"We are expecting a lot from him this season because I think that he is one of the best goalkeepers in this competition, and he showed it against JC on Saturday when he was awarded the Match of the Match award," Williams said.
"He is a very intelligent player who understands the game and he is bright in his schoolwork, so I think that he has a very bright future in the game," he added.
Striker Armani Reid, who netted the equaliser for STATHS against JC, is among six senior players to have returned to this year's team.
Reid, along with fellow attackers Shamir Gibbs and Barrington Bailey had an excellent game against JC on Saturday and they are expected to test Bridgeport's defensive unit today.
Meanwhile, in the group's other games, Mona will tackle Jamaica College and Donald Quarrie will entertain Papine.
