Underdogs Hydel looking for JC upset
Hydel will enter their opening match against defending champions Jamaica College (JC) in Group F of the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup with a depleted squad of 15 players today.
The match will be played at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex at 3 p.m.
However, Corey Bennett, Hydel technical director, said he is confident that his charges will do well against the champions.
"We only have 15 IDs, which has set us back, but are not making an excuses because we going there to compete and we are hoping for a good result," said Bennett.
"It is the start of the season and we want to be as confident as possible, and we are hoping for a positive result," he said.
"We are hoping to stay competitive for 90-minutes, because we know that it is going to be a tough one, but I don't think it is going to be easy for Jamaica College either," Bennett added.
Hydel have retained seven players from last season's team, including Shaquan Davis, Jermaine Reid and Tyrese Simms.
JC, who are seeking their sixth straight hold on the title, will start as the favourites to win.
The Old Hope Road-based institution, who first won the first edition Manning Cup in 1909, have won seven times in the last 11 years.
They are also the most successful school in the history of the Manning Cup with 29 titles.
The Dark Blues will be under the guidance of Andrew Peart, who took the reins from Miguel Coley, who left JC at the end of last season.
Ian Forbes, manager of the Old Hope Road-based institution, said his team has prepared well for this encounter and they are aiming for a positive result.
"Hydel is usually is a very tough team and a very competitive team, so we are expecting a tough game from them," said Forbes.
"We have been preparing for a while now and the preparations have gone very well. We are expecting to get good results in this encounter," Forbes said.
JC will be depending heavily on their returning players, Shaneil Thomas, Nathan Hunter, Nathan Hunter, Tahja Reynolds, Saqlain Waul and Khari Williams to lead their charge to victory.
