Sterling targets improvements
After a generally poor showing in Game One of their best-of-two Lasco Sunshine Series, national senior defender Shamera Sterling says that she is planning to do much better in the final game tonight against rivals Trinidad and Tobago.
The match will be played at the National Indoor Sports Centre, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Sterling, who is rated as one of the top defenders in the world, had a below-par showing in the first quarter, which prompted the Sunshine Girls coaching staff to substitute her midway the second stanza.
The Jamaicans went on to dominate game, winning 61-40, but the defender has echoed the sentiments of captain Jhaniele Fowler-Reid in noting that a lot more needs to be done in the coming assignments.
Sterling admitted to STAR Sports that her performance was off in Sunday's opening game but that she plans to step up tonight and prove to everyone why she is rated as one of the best in her position.
"I am not quite pleased with my performance because I thought I could have done a lot better," said Sterling. "I just need to step up my defending area, but who came on for me did a very good job for the team.
"I think the team went out there and did their best, but I didn't think I did my best the way that I should have done," said 22-year-old Sterling.
The lanky player added that she was not quite herself in the game, but she was now fully focused and ready for today's encounter.
"I have a lot more to put out on court, and so you can expect a much better performance in Game Two and for the England, series as well because that is not the Shamera that went on court today (Sunday)," Sterling said.
Sterling, who plays goalkeeper, had an outstanding year with Loughborough Lightning in the Vitality Netball Super League in England, where she won four awards, including the Most Valuable Player (MVP) trophy.
She was recently signed by Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Australian Suncorp Super League.
The Sunshine Girls will face rivals England in a three-Test series starting on Thursday at the same venue.
