Members of the Kingston College team celebrate after scoring against Calabar High during their Walker Cup KO football match at the Stadium East field yesterday.

Kingston College (KC) advanced to the quarterfinals of the ISSA Walker Cup knockout competition after a comprehensive 3-0 win over perennial rivals Calabar High yesterday at Stadium East.

KC were in fine form against their age-old rivals with Kajay Fletcher opening the scoring in the 10th minute before Deshawn Byfield doubled the lead in the 45th minute.

Zaire Douse completed the rout for KC in the 90th minute and secured their passage to the next round.

KC’s head coach Jermaine Miller said it was a solid performance from his team as they contended well with Calabar’s high pressing game.

He explained they had more control in the second half after they adjusted their tactics at the break.

“I thought it was really decent performance from the team. In the first half, Calabar were really pressing us very high, They brought five and sometimes six [players] to the frontline and it made it a little bit difficult for us to play how we wanted to play,” he explained.

KC opened the scoring early in the contest when Byfield played in Fletcher on the edge of the box.

With acres of space, Byfield let loose a thunderous shot that found the roof of the net.

KC doubled the lead right before the half-time break when Byfield was on hand to tap home into an empty net after an initial save from Calabar’s goalkeeper.

Kemar Ricketts, head coach of Calabar, said the timing of both first-half goals, both coming within the opening and closing 10 minutes of the half, were the architects of his team’s defeat.

He said it demoralised his boys who could not find an answer in the second half.

“There were several key moments in the game. The first action where the youngster picked up the ball up top and we didn’t do much to close down his shot,” he explained.

“We didn’t take our chances and that was one of the biggest things today.”

Douse’s goal in time added was in similar fashion to KC’s first, as he picked up the ball in space on the edge of the box before letting fly, finding the roof of the net.

With the win, KC advanced to the quarterfinals of the Walker Cup, where they will face the winners of today’s match between St Andrew Technical High and St Jago High.

Also in Walker Cup action, Jamaica College booked their spots in the final eight after turning back St George’s College 2-1 at the Ashenheim Stadium.

Wolmer’s Boys, in their encounter, got the better of St Catherine High 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Eltham High were also winners on the day and continued their impressive performances in the Walker Cup as they hammered Campion College 5-0.
