‘We’ve to play better’ Reggae Boyz captain Blake reflects after Nations League loss against Honduras

For the first time in 13 years, Honduras defeated the Reggae Boyz, edging Jamaica 1-0 in Group B of League A action in the 2026 Concacaf Nations League, at the National Stadium on Monday night.
Keyrol Figueroa scored the all-important goal for the Hondurans in the 15th minute of the contest.
The win snapped an eight-game unbeaten streak Jamaica held over Honduras, which began in 2013.
Reggae Boyz captain Andre Blake said it was a rough night for the Boyz, but they will need to quickly recover for their remaining games.
“It was a tough one. I think we started off a little bit slow and a little bit flat. They got a goal, and it was always going to be difficult chasing the game because they are a very good team,” Blake said after the match.
“I think we have to play better and start the game faster because against really good teams, they are not going to give you 20, 25 minutes to settle in. We have to pick the positives from tonight, it wasn’t all negative.”
Blake added, “We just have to rest, recover and come again.”
Jamaica endured a slow start to the contest and had little answer to Honduras’ waves of attack.
The Hondurans came close to scoring in the fourth minute when Dereck Moncada latched on to a through ball and forced a save from Blake in the third minute.
The Boyz’ night only got worse when they were forced to make an early substitution as Renaldo Cephas was forced out of the game due to injury.
Honduras’ pressure eventually paid off in the 15th minute when Figueroa opened the scoring.
Figueroa was quick to latch onto a ball played across the face of goal and smashed home from close range to give the visitors the lead.
Jamaica looked to respond and had a half-chance to equalise seven minutes later, but Kaheim Dixon’s delivery into the box was just out of reach for Bailey Cadamarteri.
That was the story of the first half as Honduras continued to press, while Jamaica struggled to create opportunities at goal.
Second half
The Reggae Boyz continued to look for a response in the second half and nearly found one with a solo effort from Cadamarteri, who cut inside and fired high over the crossbar.
Honduras were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Moncada was shown a straight red card after a coming together with Jamaica’s Ronaldo Webster.
Despite playing a man down, Honduras continued to press and came close to a second goal in the 73rd minute.
A loose ball around the back allowed Vargas to send the ball into the box where Luis Palma was left unmarked at the back post.
Palma headed the ball back into the path of Figueroa, who was inches away from finishing into an empty net.
Honduras again had a chance at goal when Deybi Flores hit a looping volley from distance that landed on the roof of the net.
Despite a desperate push in the final moments, Honduras held on for the win, handing Jamaica their first defeat in the 2026 Nations League.
The win means Jamaica now sit third in the group standings, level on points with Honduras, who sit fourth.
Jamaica will next face El Salvador at the Estadio Cuscatlan on Friday.
