Fuller: The players are ready
Mount Pleasant Football Academy are ready to take another step towards history with player Nickalia Fuller insisting the reigning champions are fully focused ahead of today’s first-leg Concacaf Caribbean Cup semi-final against Trinidad and Tobago’s Club Sando.
The St Ann-based club will face Club Sando at the Hasely Crawford Stadium for the first leg of the tie which kicks off at 7 p.m. Jamaica time.
Mt Pleasant will be hoping to secure a crucial advantage before the return fixture at Sabina Park on October 22.
Mount Pleasant are aiming to become the first team to successfully defend the Caribbean Cup title, having lifted the trophy for the first time last season.
Fuller, speaking in the pre-match press conference yesterday, said the team has maintained the same mentality that saw them lifting the CFU Club Shield title earlier this season.
Fuller, who signed for Mt Pleasant during the summer, has been a key player for Mt Pleasant, bagging two goals during the group stage.
“The mindset has been the same. From the first game, from the start of this season, from when we played the first tournament here which we won to be in this competition, it’s the same mindset,” Fuller said.
“The players are definitely ready and they are fully focused for this game. It means a lot to us so we are ready,” he added.
Mt Pleasant booked their place in the semi-finals after topping Group B with seven points, but their passage to the knockout stage was not without difficulty.
The defending champions needed a victory over fellow Jamaican outfit Cavalier on the final day of the group stage to secure their progression.
They will now face a Club Sando side seeking to take advantage of home conditions and put themselves in a strong position ahead of the second leg.
EXECUTION
Mt Pleasant head coach Theodore ‘Tappa’ Whitmore believes the semi-final provides another opportunity for his team to demonstrate its progress on the regional stage.
However, he has warned that their ambitions must be matched by their performances.
“It’s a great feeling. Personally, this is something that we want to do. This is to show that we are doing something and we are heading in the right direction,” Whitmore said.
“It’s very important what we do from now to really achieve the objective that we set out to achieve,” he continued..
“I think we are in a good mood. Going out there and not executing and not getting the desired result will be disappointing, so we don’t want to take anything for granted,” he said.
With the away-goal rule still in effect in the Caribbean Cup, Mount Pleasant will also be mindful of the importance of their performance in Trinidad ahead of the decisive return leg in Kingston.
