Abortion is a huge sin

Dear Pastor,

Good day to you. This is my first time writing to you. I've read your columns, and you do give good and firm advice. You're doing a great job, and I hope that you will continue to touch the lives and the heart of many other people. Anyway, I congratulate you for not recommending abortion or to support it. I've read your columns, and I have learnt a lot.

Abortion is a huge sin, and how could a person not have compassion and mercy upon an innocent life? I was once faced with abortion thoughts, and I just couldn't see myself doing it. I would consider myself a murderer, and my conscience would haunt me both day and night. God will not be happy to see what many of us have done, and He states that clearly in Exodus 20:13 "Thou shalt not kill".

Instead of committing abortion, one should give up the child for adoption or to someone who would be willing to take that child until one is able to support him or her. Abortion would not make one's life better, and one will have to give an account to God for the life she has taken. Be blessed.

What I do not support is abortion on demand. But I do want to make it clear that there might be occasions when an abortion is necessary, and I wish to say that if the doctor's advises a woman that her life is in danger if she carries a pregnancy, then an abortion might become necessary. Secondly, if a woman has become pregnant through incest and she finds it difficult to carry that child, she should not be forced to carry the pregnancy. Thirdly, if a woman is raped and she becomes pregnant and she does not wish to carry that pregnancy, she should not be forced to do so either. But, if she has voluntarily had sex with a man and she becomes pregnant, I could not, with clear conscience, encourage her to terminate that pregnancy.

Having said the above, let me add that there are women who were raped and they got pregnant and they carried the pregnancy. Some have become pregnant through incestuous means and these women have also carried their pregnancy, but they have suffered ridicule. I also know of a woman who was told by her doctor not to have any more children and she ignored him and she died at child's birth. Then there are those who had unprotected sex and became pregnant and had abortions and regret doing so.

Before any woman considers doing an abortion, she should be counselled. Many young people were forced to have abortions because their parents insist that they do so, and many of them look back after it was done and have regretted what they did.
