In Jamaica, the Christmas season is generally acknowledged as the highlight of most children's lives with gift giving, hanging of colourful decorations, fanciful meals and family visits.

For 'Sauce Boss' Kemar Highcon, Christmas now is in stark contrast to what he was used to as a child growing up in Kingston. He said that Christmas was the highlight of his life growing up.

"My family had embraced Christmas and all what Christmas was about. A lot of the traditions, my parents and grandparents embraced like rum cake and sorrel and exchanging gifts. But it was mainly about us as kids though," he reflected.

He said that as they got older, he became aware of the religious aspect and that to some extent would impact upon how he would later observe the holidays.

Since becoming an adult and breaking out as an artiste, he has been making Christmas merry for others through his foundation.

"I did a Christmas treat at a girls' home one year. I felt good doing it because I understand what Christmas meant as a child and as a young person, so the fact that I could have given back, that was good," he said.

However, the Sauce Boss noted that his Christmases have also been spent working.

"As an artiste I did more Christmas parties. I did more Christmas functions and I travelled more, which I enjoyed because I love what I am doing," he told THE WEEKEND STAR.

With COVID-19 being the big spoiler it is, Kemar Highcon said that he would be celebrating in whatever way that is in accordance with protocols.

"I am actually working for the holidays. I'm happy that I will be able to do some work, but COVID has changed a lot in everybody's life. We still deh yah, life still a keep," he said.

Arguably, the highlight of 2021 for him was being the guest entertainer at Verzuz Iconz, which saw the return of dancehall legend Super Cat, as well as the release of his trendy song, Shortz & Bad Socks.

"I have a lot of work coming out next year. COVID kind of slowed me down a bit. It [2021] was good and it was bad. I learned a lot of things in this time and space. I appreciate the fact that I got to reflect a lot and to put things into perspective," he shared.
